Cancun - Sun tans & Sangria

Amy and I parted ways with North America's largest ski resort Whistler, Canada in search of a greater cultural experience and warm weather, so we decided to pack our bags and book a flight via Houston, Texas to Cancun, and commence our travels through Central America.

After countless research we decided that Cancun would be an ideal destination to start our travels as it was further south of Mexico City, a well travelled place and give us both an opportunity to adjust from the snowy hills of Whistler to the warm beaches of Mexico and give us a direct gateway into Central America.

Once we had disembarked and collected our backpacks, we made our way outside of the terminal to try and arrange transport, as per usual after a long flight you are a bit diorientated and the taxi service of Cancun took advantage of this.  The taxi shuttles offer transport for $320 pesos ($24 AUD) per person to get into the main town (which we paid) of Cancun. I tend to forget when landing in a new country to barter, so you can do this for $50 pesos if you have your whits about you, or catch the bus..... Not a good start to a budget backpacking trip.

Backyard of Hostel Quetzal
After our expensive thirty minute journey we arrived at "Hostel Quetzal" to a warm welcome and find out the hostel provides free breakfast, dinner, $1.50 Carona's and your bed made every morning all for 11 u.s dollars. Monica, Jerry and Brian (staff) were amazing and gave us so much information on where to go and what to see while visiting cancun briefly."I Would Defiantly Recommend Hostel Quetzal as a place to stay"

As we only visited Cancun for three days we were limited on what we could see and do due to many months of travel in cheaper countries, yet I recommend a short visit to the following:

Food Market close to hostel quetzal
Local Food Market - Make your way to the local food market at night which is two blocks away from Hostel Quetzal and opens around 7pm. The food market sells very tasty traditional mexican food at a very good price. I purchased 4 tacos and a pop to wash it down for $2.50 AUD.

Isla Majures - Playa Norte
Isla Majures - (posted on my next blog) is a small island town a short distance off the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) northeast of Cancun

Westin Hotel - Take the R1 bus to the Westin Hotel which is fifteen minutes from Hostel Quetzal. Head down there to relax on a hammock and have a swim in their amazing infinity pool.

Next stop in Mexico is Playa del Carmen.
